Grenada Receives Governor-General Approval For Cannabis Reforms

Grenada is an island nation located in the Caribbean. Grenada is often referred to as the “Spice Isle” and comprises a main island, also called Grenada, and smaller surrounding islands. It is a top tourist destination in the region, known for its nutmeg plantations and colorful homes.

The nation’s parliament recently approved legislation that modernizes the country’s cannabis laws, providing certain freedoms for adults and laying the groundwork for a regulated medical industry. The legislation also provides for expungements of past criminal offenses and affirms the constitutional rights of the local Rastafari community to use cannabis as a sacrament in certain settings. The reforms were recently approved by the Governor-General.

“Governor-General Her Excellency Dame Cecile La Grenade has assented to the Drug Abuse (Prevention and Control Amendment) Act, 2026, marking a historic milestone in Grenada’s cannabis reform.” reported Now Grenada in its local coverage. “The announcement of the Act appears in the Grenada Government Gazette, Volume 144, Number 9, published by authority on Friday, 20 February 2026, in St George’s. Copies of the Act are available at the Treasury, post offices, district revenue offices, and police stations throughout Grenada.”

“Grenada has now entered Phase I of its cannabis initiative, which decriminalises cannabis for personal and religious use while maintaining strict safeguards. Adults may possess up to 56 grams of cannabis and up to 15 grams of cannabis resin. Individuals may also cultivate up to four cannabis plants, provided they first register with the Cannabis Secretariat and the Ministry of Agriculture. The Cannabis Secretariat will soon release formal guidelines for household cultivation registration.” the outlet also reported.

The United Kingdom governed Grenada from 1762 to 1974, at which point Grenada gained its independence. Governor-General Dame Cécile Ellen Fleurette La Grenade has been Governor-General of Grenada since being appointed by Queen Elizabeth II in 2013, making her the country’s first female Governor-General.

“Grenada gained independence from Britain in 1974 and is an independent nation within the British Commonwealth….and is represented locally by the Governor General, who is appointed on the advice of the Prime Minister. Grenada has a West Minister Style Parliamentary form of Government. The Parliament which exercises legislative power consists of the House of Representatives and the Senate. Executive power lies with the Prime Minister and his Cabinet.” states the Embassy of Grenada to the United States, describing its political structure.
