PubMed is a free, searchable database that is operated as a service of the National Library of Medicine (United States). A search of the database for the word ‘marijuana’ now yields over 53,000 results of global studies, trials, and other research conducted. Brazil has particularly experienced increased interest in cannabis research in recent years, and thanks to a recent approval from the government, the nation’s cannabis research output is set to experience future growth.

“Brazilian agricultural research agency Embrapa has received the greenlight from health agency Anvisa to research the cannabis plant, a landmark move that puts farming powerhouse Brazil a step closer towards authorizing its cultivation.” reported Reuters in its original coverage.

“In an interview on Friday, Embrapa researcher Daniela Bittencourt welcomed Anvisa’s decision this week, which gives the agency unprecedented permission to build its first-ever cannabis seed bank and develop projects to genetically improve the plant for various applications.” the outlet also reported.

Industrial hemp research will also be a part of the new approval, and funding is earmarked for carrying out research for at least 12 years. Embrapa’s scientists initially applied for approval in September 2024. The researchers will receive an initial $2.41 million investment to fund their efforts.
