Türkiye Researchers: “Hemp By-Products In Livestock Diets Has Strategic Importance”
Hemp as a source for livestock feed was the focus of a recent analysis conducted by a team of researchers based in Türkiye. Researchers affiliated with Yozgat Bozok University and Erciyes University evaluated the effects of adding various forms of hemp to livestock feed on carcass characteristics and meat quality. Their findings were published in the Journal of Hemp and
Biotechnology Research.
“The current trend in global human population growth predicts that animal protein production will need to increase by approximately 60% or more by 2050. This situation places the responsibility on the livestock industry to ensure a sustainable supply of animal products. In general, animal feed accounts for more than 70% of the total cost in animal production.” the researchers wrote.
They point out a growing worldwide need to incorporate sustainable practices into livestock operations, including feed production. The hemp plant is one of the most ecologically friendly crops on the planet, and it also possesses significant nutritional properties, both for humans and animals.
Researchers analyzed several previous studies that focused on hemp by-products being fed to cattle, sheep, goats, pigs, and poultry. Study after study found that adding hemp to livestock feed did not negatively impact the growth or productivity of livestock. Conversely, studies have found that hemp feed boosts the fatty acid profile of certain meats and that hemp-based compounds may extend their shelf life.
“In conclusion, the use of industrial hemp by-products in livestock diets has strategic importance in terms of both environmental sustainability and the production of high-quality animal protein. It is clear that hemp contributes to a healthier supply of red and white meat by increasing the nutritional value and antioxidant capacity of animal products.” the researchers wrote.
The global poultry feed market is massive, with analysts from Global Market Insights estimating that the international poultry feed market value was over $240 billion in 2025, and is projected to increase to $427.2 billion by 2035.
