Costa Rica Achieves Medical Cannabis Industry Milestone
Medical cannabis patients in Costa Rica have benefited from recent public policy modernization efforts, with domestic safe access to medical cannabis therapies finally becoming a reality thanks to the tireless work of advocates. The nation’s medical cannabis industry is off the ground, and as of this month, Costa Rica’s legal industry has expanded to the global market.
“Hybrida Farms, the brand name of Costa Rican licensed operating entity Vantage Point Global CR S.A., today announced the successful completion of Costa Rica’s first pharmaceutical-grade medical cannabis export to the European Union.” wrote The Manila Times.
“Costa Rica has built a global reputation through decades of excellence in agriculture and precision medical manufacturing, defined by scientific rigor, environmental responsibility, and uncompromising quality. This export extends that legacy into pharmaceutical-grade natural medicine and marks a milestone in the country’s agricultural and pharmaceutical export history.” the outlet also wrote.
The Central American nation joins several other countries in becoming an active participant in the emerging legal international cannabis industry. For many years, countries limited their legal cannabis industries to domestic operations, but in recent years, medical cannabis imports and exports have increased significantly across the globe.
More than 95 percent of Costa Rica’s grid is reportedly powered by renewable energy, giving the country an advantage over many other countries. Costa Rica already exports a significant amount of medical products and equipment, albeit not cannabis-related historically. The nation is also a top exporter of bananas and pineapples.
Europe is a top destination for medical cannabis exports from other countries. Germany is a particularly popular target for medical cannabis exports, with the European nation having imported over 201 tonnes of medical cannabis products in 2025 alone.
At the most recent International Cannabis Business Conference in Berlin, Beau Whitney, founder of Whitney Economics, projected that the value of the global industrial hemp industry could be as much as $456.2 billion. By comparison, Beau Whitney’s estimate for the potential global medical and adult-use cannabis market is roughly $237.8 billion.
