In many ways, social cannabis use is the next frontier for the emerging cannabis industry. Social cannabis use can take on various forms, from permitting people to consume cannabis in designated areas at non-cannabis establishments to social clubs. Another logic setting for permitted cannabis activity is at events, such as concerts and festivals.
As time goes by and the emerging legal cannabis industry continues to expand, more jurisdictions are permitting cannabis activity at various events, including in Calgary, where officials recently announced that cannabis sales will be allowed at all-ages events under certain conditions.
“The city officially amended its Business Licence Bylaw to align municipal regulations with recent updates from the Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis Commission (AGLC), which began permitting cannabis sales at all-ages entertainment events in July 2025.” stated CityNews in its local coverage.
“Retailers must now ensure that all sales and consumption take place in designated areas where minors are not permitted. Cannabis sales and consumption areas must be clearly marked and physically separated.” the outlet also reported.
The City of Calgary already approved cannabis sales at adults-only events back in May, and consumption of cannabis at such events was already permissible leading up to the approval of sales at adults-only events. Expanding permitted sales to include all-ages events was a logical move by government officials.
Alcohol sales are a common facet at many public events, including all-ages events, both in Calgary and throughout Canada. Just as alcohol sales can be successfully regulated at all-ages events, the same should be true for legal cannabis sales.
There will presumably be some selective outcry from cannabis opponents about cannabis being sold at all-ages events. However, those concerns are easily extinguished by the sensible regulations involved, not the least of which is the continued enforcement of Canada’s laws that prohibit sales or gifting of cannabis to underage individuals.
