97 Cannabis Associations Approved In North Rhine-Westphalia
A major component of Germany’s adult-use cannabis legalization model involves permitting consumers to join a member-based cultivation association. Approved cultivation associations, sometimes referred to as ‘social clubs,’ help registered adult cannabis consumers source their cannabis products legally.
According to the most recent numbers from the Federal Association of Cannabis Cultivation Associations (BCAv), a total of 337 cultivation association applications have been approved so far across Germany. BCAv lists that a total of 759 applications have been submitted to regulators. According to local reporting, North Rhine-Westphalia has approved 97 of those applications.
“In North Rhine-Westphalia, 97 cannabis cultivation associations have now been approved, according to a dpa survey of the responsible district governments. 77 applications are still pending review.” reported NTV in its local coverage (translated from German to English). “According to a spokesperson, the Cologne District Government has so far received 54 applications, 25 cultivation associations have been approved, 26 applications are still pending, and three have been withdrawn. No applications have been rejected.”
“The Düsseldorf district government says it has received 53 applications and approved 27 associations so far. Six applications have been withdrawn and none have been rejected.” the outlet also reported.
Below is a current breakdown of the total number of German cannabis cultivation association applications received, approved, rejected, and withdrawn via a recent newsletter from BCAv. As you will see below, BCAv has slightly different statistics for North Rhine-Westphalia. However, the statistics provided for the region are from earlier this month:
Officials in North Rhine-Westphalia previously estimated that their state could eventually be home to as many as 3,000 cultivation associations based on population. With that in mind, there is still plenty of room for improving the total number of cannabis cultivatoin associations in the region.
