Czech Cannabis Legalization Officially Takes Effect

As the clock struck midnight, Central European Time, a historic public policy change took effect in the Czech Republic. Starting today, adults who are 21 years old or older in Czechia can cultivate up to 3 cannabis plants for recreational purposes.

Additionally, adults in the European country can possess up to 100 grams of cannabis in their homes and 25 grams away from their homes. Czechia joins Malta, Luxembourg, and Germany as legalized European nations. Cannabis is also currently legal for adult use in Uruguay, Canada, and South Africa.

“Legal cannabis cultivation will henceforth be permitted only for persons aged 21 and over. In addition, cultivation may take place only in a property owned by the individual or in premises to which they have a legal right of use, such as under a rental agreement. The law does not set requirements for securing the plants or specify particular cultivation methods. Cannabis may be grown indoors, outdoors, or in a greenhouse.” reported Prague Daily News in its local coverage.

“Cultivation of up to three cannabis plants with a THC content of over one per cent is permitted. Cultivating four to five plants is considered an administrative offence, while six or more plants constitute a criminal offence.” the outlet also reported.

Sales of adult-use cannabis products with a THC content of over 1% will remain prohibited in the Czech Republic for the time being. Cannabis advocates in Czechia will continue to push for cultivation associations and regional adult-use cannabis commerce pilot trials, such as are allowed in a handful of other European jurisdictions.
