Gallup has conducted several different polls focusing on cannabis over the years, including surveying adults in the United States about whether they consume cannabis or not. According to a recent Gallup poll, 17% of surveyed adults in the U.S. report being a ‘cannabis smoker.’

Comparatively, only 11% of polled U.S. adults reported being a tobacco cigarette smoker, which is a record low for Gallup polling. Tobacco cigarette use peaked in the U.S. in 1954, according to Gallup, with 45% of U.S. adults having “smoked any cigarettes” within the last week.

Separately, 15% of poll participants indicated that they consume cannabis-infused edibles. Gallup conducted its annual ‘Consumption Habits’ poll from July 1st-19th, 2026. In addition to cannabis and tobacco cigarette use, Gallup also asked adults if they consume alcohol (54%), coffee (49%), and caffeinated soda (20%).

Gallup’s annual ‘Consumption Habits’ poll did not appear to ask U.S. adults how often they smoke cannabis or consume edibles. Rather, the cannabis questions posed to poll participants were geared toward yielding simple ‘yes’ or ‘no’ answers.

For perspective, consider that the European Union Drugs Agency estimates that 8.7% of European adults (25 million aged 15 to 64) report having used cannabis ‘in the last year,’ with 12.6% of adults in Spain reporting yearly cannabis use – the largest rate in Europe. Spain is followed by France and Italy, both of which reported 10.8% annual usage rates, and then Germany at 9.8%.

When it comes to European adults who report having consumed cannabis at least once within the last month, Spain leads the way with an estimated 10.5% of adults reporting monthly cannabis use, followed by France at 6.3%, Czechia at 6.1%, and the Netherlands at 5.5%.

“Overall, 17% of people in Canada aged 16 years and older reported consuming cannabis for non-medical purposes in the past 30 days (up from 15% in 2018).” the Canadian government reported earlier this year (using data from 2024).
