CONFERENCE OVERVIEW – Alex Rogers, Executive Producer of the ICBC, outlines the day’s events.
CALIFORNIA CONTROLLED: AN INTERVIEW WITH THE CALIFORNIA BUREAU OF CANNABIS CONTROL – California’s chief regulator Lori Ajax and communications director Alex Traverso discuss the rollout of medical and adult use commercial cannabis licensing, hot-fixes to regulations and common errors industry operators are making on the path to licensure. Learn how public comment is shaping the regulations, how multiple state agencies are coordinating with each other, and how local jurisdictions are handling their duties. We’ll also outline the regulatory challenges to come and provide a timeline for them.
COMPLIANCE: NO EASY END TO PROHIBITION – California’s new marijuana regulations are a challenge for both existing business and entry-level entrepreneurs. Prohibition era fears cloud the path, where complicated procedures and high taxes joined to set the barrier too high for most operators. As businesses close across the state, advocates and industry experts alike wonder how to create a fair and equitable processes. Attend this panel to review the problems and to discuss the future with industry regulators and thought leaders.
TECH FOR SCALE – From cutting edge extraction and cultivation hardware to software platforms adding efficiencies to operations and distribution, much of the competition between which brands and products will have greatest market share will relate to tech – specifically which players move fastest to embrace new systems allowing for greater throughput volumes and efficiencies. Our panelists include industry leading heads of tech platforms and third party production specialists who will provide insights related to scaling and getting the next level with your business.
DISTRIBUTION AND LOGISTICS – The broadening of distribution permits offered by California opens the field up to warehousing logistics, and 3PL providers who can assist the many different types of sizes and types. Our panel of distributors and logistics providers will share their vastly differing models, which covers end-to-end full-service distribution, to a-la-cart offerings such as stand-alone transport, warehousing, or virtual inventory software, discussing which of these multiple models offer solutions for the needs of each and every product maker or brand.
INVESTING IN CALIFORNIA CULTIVATION – California, the sixth-largest economy in the world (and growing), is the most lucrative marijuana market in the world. Of course, cannabis commerce needs cultivators to succeed and such a huge market presents big opportunities for growers. Paul King will cover the ins and outs of commercially cultivating cannabis in the Golden State, providing first-hand experience, sharing some real-world anecdotes and even busting a few myths in the process. Paul will break down the numbers, methods and differences between different types of grows and will give insight into getting the proper types of investors and investment deals for your operation.

You’ll be better prepared to navigate these treacherous cannabis markets after attending this session.
MEDIA & MARKETING: MAINSTREAMING CANNABIS CONTENT AND EXPERIENCES – The days of counter culture stoner content and experiences are being supplanted with modern voices and sophisticated opportunities that help consumers discover cannabis brands that matter to them. Hear from industry leaders in cannabis media and events and learn how they’re shaping elevated experiences for today’s mainstream consumer.
STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIPS: A KEY TO SURVIVE AND THRIVE – Specialization is a major factor attracting capital and helping grow the Cannabis sector at hyper-speed. As businesses scale, focused models will be a necessity from both economic and regulatory perspectives, allowing companies to position and embed into the Industry value chain alongside other ‘specialists’. Our panel of Industry experts will discuss strategy in identifying synergies in prospective strategic partners and offer their insights related to making these significant decisions which can be a determining factor in the survival and ultimate success of your business.
LEGAL CANNABIS DOES NOT EQUAL CLEAN CANNABIS: CHALLENGING THE INDUSTRY TO HIGHER STANDARDS – This year marks a New Cannabis Era in California, but legal cannabis does not equal clean cannabis. New regulations require product testing for specific pesticides, but pesticides and other contaminants will continue to be an issue because brands can exhaust inventory that does not meet the newly set standards for purity until mid-year. Although stringent, California’s regulations still leave too many opportunities for contaminated cannabis to fall into the hands of consumers even after the grace period for unregulated inventory has expired. During this panel discussion, The Handpicked Company Co-Founder Steve Koskie will lead a conversation with Angus Mills, Cultivation and Agriculture Development Director at The Handpicked Company, and Ian Rice, Principal and Vice President of SC Labs and Envirocann, around why everyone involved in the industry must exceed government standards in order to not only deliver clean cannabis to consumers, but ensure the cannabis industry’s success in California and beyond.
We have an amazing lineup for our December event in Kauai. See our Kauai Speakers page for full list of speakers with bios.

When it comes to medical cannabis research, no one has Israel beat. Canadian legislators hemmed and hawed this week when their country’s Health Minister Ginette Petitpas Taylor suggested that retail sales for cannabis should take another eight to 12 weeks following royal assent for their cannabis legalization bill, Bill C-45. (Royal assent is a formality of Canadian law, and of other countries which recognize a monarchy, whereby...
