How Popular Are Cannabis Concentrates In North America?

Concentrated forms of cannabis are not new. Cannabis hash has been made and distributed in many parts of the world for decades. Moroccan hash has a particularly rich history, especially among cannabis consumers on the European continent. However, the variety of types of cannabis concentrates has increased considerably in recent years in legal cannabis markets, including in North America.

Common types of cannabis concentrates in legal North American markets include (but are not limited to) live resin, wax, shatter, rosin, and distillates. According to cannabis industry data company Cannamonitor, the cannabis concentrates sector is still small compared to other sectors of the industry, but is increasing in size slowly but steadily.

“US concentrates are just 5.2% of sales (Q1 2026, Headset) versus 3.3% in Canada (Ontario) — solventless formats are gaining in both.” Cannamonitor wrote in a recent newsletter. “Canada shows the format’s appeal: traditional hash accounts for C$38m (50%) of Ontario’s C$75.9m concentrate sales.”

Creating cannabis products for European markets was a major topic at the recent International Cannabis Business Conference in Berlin. A panel of experts provided an overview of the different methods used to make cannabis extracts, discussed the benefits and drawbacks of each method, and provided insights about which cannabis concentrates and edible product types hold the most profit potential.

The panel was moderated by Steve Fuhr, Sales Director at SciPhy Systems. He was joined by:
