Australia’s medical cannabis market is a top target for medical cannabis exports from other countries. According to cannabis data company Cannamonitor, Australia’s medical cannabis industry imported a record amount of products in 2025, reaching a total of over 81 tonnes. In addition to the imported medical cannabis, over 55 tonnes of medical cannabis was produced domestically in Australia. However, not all of that total of over 136 tonnes of medical cannabis reached the nation’s patients. Cannamonitor estimates that only 63.3 tonnes of medical cannabis actually made it to patients, although Australia did export roughly 6.8 tonnes in 2025, according to the data company.

“Canada shipped 21% less flower to Australia in 2025, from 62.1t to 49.1t, and imports still hit a record. Thailand went from 1.1t to 20.7t, a quarter of the total, with South Africa, New Zealand and Colombia holding smaller positions.” Cannamonitor stated in a recent email blast.

To place Australia’s medical cannabis import total into perspective, consider that Germany, which is the top medical cannabis importer on the planet, imported roughly 205 tonnes of medical cannabis from other countries in 2025.

A survey conducted in Australia late last year found that most people support incorporating medical cannabis into mainstream healthcare, finding that 64% of survey participants support incorporating medical cannabis into mainstream healthcare.
